Michelle Pfeiffer Makes the Vegan Switch!

English: Michelle Pfeiffer at the premiere of ...

The number of A-list stars adopting the healthy and compassionate lifestyle just keeps on growing! They include Ozzy Osbourne, Kristin Bell, Russell Brand, Ellen Degeneres and Ben Stiller.

One of the newest celebrities to talk about their new vegan diet is Michelle Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer, 54, recently opened up to Dr. Sanjay Gupta on CNN about her decision to become a vegan to protect her health.

“My father died from cancer, and the older you get, there’s a lot of disease around you. And you see people struggling with chronic disease. You see people dying with terminal illnesses,” she told Gupta on “Piers Morgan Tonight.”

The Oscar-nominated actress revealed that her decision came about after watching CNN’s “The Last Heart Attack,” which discussed plant-based diets as a solution to preventing chronic diseases. She was inspired by Bill Clinton, who committed to the plant-based diet to reverse dangerous heart problems.  A self-proclaimed “foodie,” Pfeiffer said she was hopeful seeing his example. “Okay, Bill Clinton loves food, so there must be something to [veganism] that’s making him stick to it. And also, he’s smart, so he’s not going to do something unless he really thinks there’s some science behind it.”

She also read Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure.

“I just felt like…there was science behind it. And, you know, it was sort of irrefutable. … I couldn’t not listen to it.”

Pfeiffer’s #2 reason for the new diet? “Vanity is right under there,” she admits, “but I have to say that it’s a close second with wanting to live long.”

Bravo Michelle Pfeiffer, on your most wise and glamorous decision to be vegan!

It’s Meatout Day! (Plus 7 Reasons to “Kick the Meat Habit”)

Today, March 20, is Meatout Day, the world’s largest annual grassroots information campaigns regarding the plant-based diet!

Thousands of people throughout all 50 states plus two dozen other countries are out there encouraging their friends, family and communities to “kick the meat habit” and explore the healthy, caring and eco diet of vegetarian/vegan fare!

Going veg a great way to start off the spring season : ) Here’s 7 awesome reasons why, according to Meatout’s founder, FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement):

Kicking the meat habit reduces our risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other chronic diseases that cripple and kill nearly 1.4 million Americans annually.

Kicking the meat habit decreases our exposure to infectious pathogens like Salmonella, E. coli, and Campylobacter, which kill several thousand Americans annually and sicken millions more.

Kicking the meat habit raises our energy level, lowers our food budget, and simplifies food preparation and cleanup.

Kicking the meat habit frees up grains and other foods that can be used to feed the world’s hungry. Animals are extremely inefficient “protein converters;” it can take up to 16 pounds of grain to make 1 pound of beef.

Kicking the meat habit preserves our topsoil, water, and other food production resources vital to the survival of our children and their children.

Kicking the meat habit protects our forests, grasslands, and other wildlife habitats from encroachment by cattle ranchers while reducing the polluting effects of methane, soil particles, manure, and pesticides on our air and water.

Kicking the meat habit saves animals from caging, crowding, deprivation, drugging, mutilation, manhandling, and agonizing slaughter. Each person who adopts a plant-based diet saves over 80 innocent, sentient animals each year. Over a lifetime, an individual can save more than 6,000 animals just by going vegan.

It’s time to begin your journey to healthy, compassionate eating.

Vegan Diet Given a Second Look

To accompany yesterday’s post about meat consumption on the decline, here’s another great year-end news, as reported on US  News, no less!

But today, a growing number of people are giving vegan diets a second look, and nutritionists now believe that a well-thought-out vegan eating plan could be the most healthy way to live for most people.

This article also lists out some of the benefits of a plant-based diet:

Research has found that people who follow a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle enjoy a number of health benefits, Sheth said. These include:

  • Lower cholesterol levels.
  • Lower blood pressure.
  • A healthier body mass index.
  • Decreased risk for heart disease.
  • Decreased risk for cancer.
  • Better control and prevention of diabetes.

Another great thing about this write-up is that it actually rebuts all of the common misconceptions of an animal-free diet.

Sheth added that research has found vegan diets to be appropriate for people at all stages of the life cycle — even people at crucial stages, such as growing children, pregnant or lactating women, and highly active athletes.

If you’re on the fence yourself or know anyone who needs some encouragement to switch to a kinder, eco-friendly, healthy lifestyle, this article is a great starting point. And of course, having delicious vegan options to try is a big plus and that’s what One Veg World is here for. 🙂 Our international dishes recreate many of your favorites – just with no animal products.

Here’s one of our crowd favorites, the “Enchanted Garden”. This refreshing salad comes with grilled veggie (soy) chicken and a dairy-free, creamy cucumber dressing.

Have a healthy and happy day!

“Forks Over Knives”: Celebs Switching to a Plant-based Diet

Wow, so awesome! Recently, celebrities Russell Brand, Ozzy Osbourne, Eliza Dushku, Rick Fox (3-time NBA Champ) proclaimed their switch to a plant-based diet after watching “Forks Over Knives.” Hopefully, they’ll continue to use their voice to spread the veg message.

This eye-opening documentary examines how many degenerative diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, obesity etc. can be prevented through an animal-free diet. It’s based on decades of research conducted independently by two pioneering vegan researchers, Dr. T. Colin Campbell (The China Study) and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Our heroes! ❤

ACTRESS/FORMER MISS PANAMA IS VEGETARIAN!

Patricia De León, star of Telemundo’s Perro Amor and TNT’s Men of a Certain Age, urgest her fellow Latinos to be veg for health. A plant-based diet can reduce the risk of heart disease, certain types of cancer, strokes, obesity and diabetes.

Patricia said, “Growing up, I was always in and out of the hospital with stomach problems, and no one could figure out what was wrong. I decided to give up meat and become a vegetarian, and I haven’t had stomach problems since! I love eating healthy, delicious vegetarian meals and the options are endless. No matter where I go, I can find vegetarian dishes that satisfy my hunger and my taste for great food.”
